What is the Kumon Method?
Founded in Japan in 1958 by Toru Kumon, the Kumon Method began as a parent's simple wish to help his own child succeed and has since grown into a globally trusted system of learning. Kumon now operates through a network of over 25,000 centres in more than 60 countries, including over 600 centres across the UK, with worksheets continually refined by dedicated academic teams through ongoing global research.
What sets Kumon apart is its focus on mastery, precision and independent learning. Across both maths and English, the programmes are built on decades of data and international collaboration, ensuring every child progresses at exactly the right pace for them. Rooted in strong fundamentals rather than any single school curriculum, Kumon gives students the depth and confidence to pursue their own academic path, supporting outstanding results in areas such as 11+ entrance exams, GCSEs and A Levels, including Further Mathematics.
At Kumon Coventry Potters Green, this world class methodology is delivered to a standard that places the centre among the top 20 in the UK and Ireland. From the very first assessment, every child receives a learning experience tailored to their own starting point, with an approach built on nurturing confidence, instilling discipline and developing the ability to learn independently.
Maths and English Programmes
Kumon Maths Tuition in Coventry
The Kumon Maths programme is built around small, structured worksheets that take students from early counting and number recognition right through to advanced calculus, with no ceiling on how far a student can progress. Every child begins with a placement test, from which the Instructor sets a personalised starting point, often below the student's current school year, to ensure a completely solid foundation before moving forward.
- Daily short worksheet sessions, designed to build fluency and speed as well as accuracy.
- Progression through arithmetic, fractions, decimals, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and beyond.
- Repetition of each level until mastery is achieved, rather than moving on before a concept is secure.
- Development of mental calculation skills alongside written methods.
- Regular Instructor review of completed work, with adjustments made to pace and level as needed.
Kumon English Tuition in Coventry
The Kumon English programme develops reading, comprehension and analytical skills through a carefully sequenced set of worksheets, starting with phonics and word recognition for younger children and building towards critical reading, essay structure and analysis of complex texts for older students.
- Daily short worksheet sessions covering vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and writing.
- Progression from phonics and simple sentence structure through to analysis of literature and non-fiction texts.
- Development of independent reading habits and stamina.
- Focus on comprehension accuracy before speed, building toward confident, analytical reading.
- Regular Instructor review, with programmes adjusted to match each student's pace.
Both programmes are self-paced rather than tied to a school year or specific exam syllabus, allowing students to work below, at, or well above their current school level depending on individual ability and confidence.
Every child's Kumon journey begins with an initial assessment, from which the Instructor sets an individualised study programme at just the right level. This is monitored and adjusted over time to ensure work remains challenging and engaging, without following any fixed school curriculum.

Meet the Instructor | Minju Rathy
Kumon Coventry Potters Green is led by Instructor Minju Rathy and her team of classroom assistants. Minju holds a degree in Commerce along with postgraduate qualifications in Commerce and Business, and began her career in 2008 as a graduate marketing trainee, developing the analytical and organisational skills she now brings to running the centre.
With over ten years of experience in Kumon, both as a centre owner and classroom assistant, Minju has a deep understanding of the Kumon Method and how to support each child's individual learning journey. She is also a Kumon parent herself, having started her own children on the programme at age three and seen the long term benefits reflected in their school success, including strong results in the 11+, Junior Maths Challenge and GCSEs.

What Familes are Saying
"Minju and her team have been absolutely fantastic with our children. Minju is incredibly dedicated and supportive, consistently guiding our kids throughout their Kumon journey. Thanks to her hard work and unwavering commitment, our son passed his 11+ exam today — and with high scores!
We truly believe it was Minju’s dedication that made this possible. Her guidance and support have played a huge role in shaping a brighter future for our children. We are so grateful and highly recommend her and her amazing team." - Gurpreet N, Google review
"My 9 year old daughter has been attending Kumon lessons for about 6 months. She was a child who struggled with basic counting. Her maths has improved dramatically, she has gained a lot of confidence and is now able to answer questions extremely quickly. From addition and subtraction she has now moved onto multiplication. The Kumon team have been wonderful with my daughter and I’d like to thank them for their help." - Sonia K, Google review
"My son has been going to Kumon for nearly a year now and has shown tremendous improvement in both English and Mathematics. KUMON has also given him more confidence in himself. He is a different person now and all thanks to Mrs. Minju who has so much belief in the Kumon system and trust in my son abilities. After seeing the results with my own eyes, I can now say I, too, have full faith in Kumon. Would recommend it to everyone, especially if your child needs that extra support. Thank you, Mrs. Minju, for all your hard work and support." - Sheralyn N, Google review
Frequently asked questions
Is Kumon suitable for struggling or gifted children? Both, and every child in between. Following an initial assessment, an individualised study plan is set to develop each child's ability regardless of their starting point, including students with special educational needs and gifted and talented children.
How is a Kumon student taught? Kumon is a self-learning programme supported by regular Instructor guidance. Worksheets are designed to help students find answers for themselves, with the Instructor monitoring progress in centre or during online classes to ensure work is set at the right level and pace.
How does Kumon differ from traditional tutoring or classroom learning? Rather than preparing children for a specific test, Kumon focuses on building independent learning skills through individualised instruction, helping students develop confidence and ability that is not reliant on others.
How will Kumon help with schoolwork? Kumon does not follow a school curriculum but is designed to complement it. By developing independent learning skills at exactly the right level for each child, Kumon supports performance across the wider school curriculum.
