Exhibits at The Midland Air Museum

The Wings Over Coventry gallery, located on the mezzanine floor of the main hangar, highlights the city’s rich aviation heritage. It features aircraft and products from notable local manufacturers, including Armstrong-Whitworth, Armstrong-Siddeley (later Bristol-Siddeley and Rolls-Royce), Humber, Alvis, and Dunlop.

A central theme of the museum is the development of jet propulsion, a tribute to one of Coventry’s most renowned figures—Sir Frank Whittle—widely recognized as the Father of the Jet Age. The story of jet aviation is a global one, and the museum’s diverse collection reflects this, showcasing aircraft such as the Swedish SAAB J29 Tunnan, the French Dassault Mystère IVA, the British English Electric Lightning, and the powerful American McDonnell-Douglas F-4C Phantom II.

The museum also captures the remarkable variety of British aircraft design during the 1950s and 1960s. Represented are carrier-based aircraft like the Hawker Sea Hawk, de Havilland Sea Vixen, Fairey Gannet, and Sea Harrier, as well as RAF fighters including the Vampire, Meteor, Hunter, Javelin, and Lightning. The jet bomber force is featured too, most prominently with the English Electric Canberra and the iconic four-engine nuclear bomber, the Avro Vulcan. The collection is rounded out by several military trainers such as the American Lockheed T-33, the Polish PZL Iskra, and the British Vampire T.11.
