What to expect at Coventry Charterhouse
A Former Monastery
This stunning Grade I listed 14th-century building has centuries of stories woven into its walls. Founded in 1381 as a Carthusian monastery, it was once home to a silent order of monks who lived simply and peacefully from the land around them.
Over time, the Charterhouse became a private residence, welcoming notable figures including Robert Dudley, the famous favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, and John Whittingham, who developed the nursery and walled garden to grow exotic fruits for wealthy Coventry residents.
In more recent history, the building’s future was secured thanks to passionate members of the local community who worked tirelessly to save it from sale and possible demolition - ensuring it remains a treasured part of Coventry’s heritage today.
Walled Garden
A magnificent 1.7 acres of walled garden surrounded by wildlife pond and community orchard.
