"We came for Dippy and got so much more than we expected!! The building itself is very interesting - with lots of beautiful architectural features. We spent several hours discovering the fascinating mix of Coventry’s history and varied art collections. There was plenty to keep the kids engaged. Cafe and toilets were clean and modern. We had coffees and cakes which were excellent." - Google review

Dippy the Dinosaur

Meet Dippy the world-famous dino-star in Coventry as it takes up residence at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. Dippy the dinosaur is a life-size replica of a Diplodocus carnegii skeleton – a 26 metre-long dinosaur that lived 155-145 million years ago. For over 100 years, Dippy has been delighting visitors of all ages at the Natural History Museum in London, and now Coventry families have the chance to discover the Jurassic giant on their doorstep.

"A very interesting and well-organised museum. The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum offers a great mix of history, art, and local heritage, making it both educational and enjoyable to visit. The exhibitions are well presented and easy to follow, with a good balance between historical artifacts, modern displays, and interactive sections. It’s a place where you can learn a lot about Coventry and its history while also enjoying art and culture.

The building itself is spacious, clean, and welcoming, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Overall, a very worthwhile place to visit in Coventry, whether you are a local or just passing through."

FAQ

Why has charging been introduced at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum?
From 1 April 2025, an entry fee was introduced to help secure the future of the Herbert. Like many organisations, rising costs have made this necessary to continue caring for the collections and delivering a high-quality visitor experience. While this is a significant change, the pricing has been designed to offer good value, including both single-day tickets and an annual pass that allows unlimited visits during opening hours.

How can I purchase admission tickets?
Tickets can be purchased online via the Herbert’s website or in person at the Box Office on the day of your visit. If you have a Go CV or Go CV+ card, please bring it with you for verification.

Can annual pass holders book exhibition tickets online?
Yes, annual pass holders can book tickets for paid exhibitions through their online account.

Are children’s activities included in admission?
Some children’s activities, such as half-term events and early years sessions, carry an additional charge. For regular visitors, an annual pass offers the best overall value.

Is Coventry Archives still free to visit?
Yes, Coventry Archives remains free to visit. However, appointments must be booked in advance, and access is via the dedicated entrance on Cathedral Square.

Can I visit the shop without paying for museum entry?
Yes, the shop is free to access via the Herbert Box Office.

Do I need to pay for entry to The Herbert to visit the café?
The café, operated by Baxters Baristas, continues to run as normal and can be accessed independently via the courtyard on Jordan Well.

Are baby changing facilities available for café visitors?
Yes, café visitors can use the museum’s baby changing facilities. Please speak to a member of the Baxters Baristas team to gain access.
