Detecting Exoplanets: other worlds beyond our Solar System

Dr. Annelies Mortier, Researcher at the University of Birmingham

Exoplanets is the name we use for planets in the Universe that are not in the Solar System. The first ones were only found in the 1990s and now we know of more than 5000 exoplanets, showing a rich and diverse population of exoplanets. In this talk, I will give a historical overview of the process in detecting these exotic other worlds and highlight some main discoveries.

Exoplanets and Science Fiction

Faith Hawthorn, Researcher at the University of Warwick

In this talk, following on from how we can find planets around other stars (‘exoplanets’), I’ll be taking a look at some of the most famous examples of exoplanets throughout science fiction, and how popular culture can be used to understand and explain some of the most interesting objects in the universe. Come with us on a journey through film, television and the world of comics to discover the weird and wonderful!
